National Library Week invites residents to join in on engaging festivities
HUNTLEY — The Huntley Area Public Library (HAPL) will mark its 35th anniversary with an exciting lineup of events that will take place starting from April 7 to April 13.
The theme for this year is “The Library is Your Literary Canvas,” which will allow residents to get creative and help design a new library card. Beginning on April 7, HAPL will have design forms available at all library service desks. Patrons can also download an online version of the form from the library’s website at www.huntleylibrary.org/nlw2024.
Individuals interested in the design contest have until April 13 to return their completed design form in the entry boxes located at the checkout counter and the Children’s Library desks. HAPL staff and members of the public will then vote on their favorite designs in two categories: children’s and teen/adult. The winning design will become actual library cards for September’s National Library Card Sign-Up Month.
In addition to the library card design contest, the HAPL will be teaming up with Lakehouse Tattoo on April 12 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., for a special “Flash Day” event exclusively for adults aged 18 and above. Patrons that attend this event will have the opportunity to browse book-themed tattoo designs and flash sheets created by talented artists and will also have the chance to win prizes by showing a valid HAPL card.
Throughout the week, HAPL will also be partnering with local businesses to keep the festivities going and to showcase the value of a HAPL card outside of the library. For example, residents who hold a valid HAPL card can get 10% off their total order at BBQ King Smokehouse and can get one free donut from Morkes Chocolate. A full list of participating businesses can be found on the HAPL website.
Alongside these community collaborations, the library will be hosting a virtual discussion and an evening with mystery/thriller author Charlie Donlea. The virtual event will take place on April 8 and the in-person meet and greet will be held on April 10 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration for both events is required.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate National Library Week and our 35th Anniversary with our incredible Huntley Area community,” said the HAPL’s Head of Marketing Doug Cataldo, in a press release statement. “Our library is more than just a repository of books, movies, and music; it’s a place where imaginations soar, connections are made, and people can truly explore endless opportunities. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the power of libraries to inspire and enrich lives.”
