Farmers Market offers outdoor fun finale
HUNTLEY — Every Saturday since late May, Wayne Workowski and his wife Linda brought their honey and other products to Huntley’s Farmers Market.
“I participate in the year-round market,” Workowski, who lives in rural Marengo, and is a Huntley High School alum, said. “You look forward to it.”
He brings all wildflower honey in various sizes.
“The bees seal it in hives and you have to extricate it from them,” Workowski said. “We also have jams, pickles, and salsa beets.”
The final outdoor Farmer’s Market will take place from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Oct. 12 with a special celebration.
“A Nightmare Before Christmas”, presented by Harvest Farmers Market, is set for 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Oct. 12. Two readings of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” will take place at 10 and 11 a.m. The costume parade is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. There will also be face painting from 9 a.m. – noon and pumpkin decorating.
“We will be embracing the spirit of Halloween with Trunk-or-Treat with the vendors, readings of “A Nightmare Before Christmas” and visits with Santa Claus, a costume parade and pumpkin decorating. Be sure to stop by for a spooky fun time,” according to the Village of Huntley Web site.
Farmers Market has been a big success on Saturday mornings.
“We’ve had as many as 50 vendors this year, and lately about 16,” said Steve Skurski, Huntley’s community engagement coordinator.
The outdoor finale will have mixed emotions for vendors.
“I’m here every Saturday; it’s kind of bittersweet. It’s fun and something I love to do,” said Kristina Jedlink, Blue Line Stables owner, who brings various kinds of beets each week.
Blueline Stables of Huntley also offers horse boarding, several types of canned products eggs, and more. For sale this Saturday were salsa, apple butter, jams, tomatoes, pickled beets, harvard beets, blueberry pie filling and dill relish.
Across the way at the Town Square, Denise Montgomery sold her various t-shirt and sweatshirt designs, DBM Design.
“I signed up for Farmer’s Market for the whole year. I’ve had the business for three years after the Lord’s calling, It just feels right. When I wear these shirts, I always get positive attitudes from people at the grocery store.”
Mike Robbins, owner of Sleepy Hollow Farms, is also an every-Saturday vendor with various produce items. “It’s been a lot of fun,” he said.
The Huntley Farmers Market goes inside on the second Saturday at Huntley American Legion Hall, for November and December, then Huntley Village Hall starting in January.
