Watson leads volleyball squad
HUNTLEY — A decision Georgia Watson made in middle school has been a key to Huntley’s volleyball success.
Watson once played basketball, but decided to make volleyball her No. 1 sport and is now looking forward to playing volleyball at D-I University of Kentucky.
Watson’s work reached a milestone when the Red Raiders beat Libertyville, 25-16, 25-23 for the McHenry Class 4A sectional title Npv. 7. HHS, 31-8, moved on to the Sweet 16. They battle Fremd (33-6) Nov. 11 at DeKalb for the right to compete at the IHSA Class 4A State Tournament.
“Watson is such a great leader for this team,” Red Raiders coach Karen Naymola said. “She gives her all every game and just has been such a positive role model in her career for Huntley.”
Recent statistics showed Watson as the leader in total kills with 390, 4.8 per set. She also had 50 aces and 132 points and 142 digs.
Watson’s sister Lucy is a freshman on the volleyball roster. They are the daughters of Meghan and Chris. Georgia Watson recently answered questions for My Huntley News.
Describe your youth volleyball experience, who were your key early mentors?
Watson: “I started playing volleyball when I was in seventh grade which was my first school season and my first club season as well. One of my earliest mentors was my first club coach at Sky High Volleyball Club and a Huntley Park District coach.”
Have you played sports other than volleyball at HHS or previously? What attracted you to volleyball as a varsity sport?
Watson: “I haven’t played any other sports in high school but prior to high school I played both AAU basketball and club volleyball but ultimately made the choice to focus on volleyball. I made this deduction because I love the environment that volleyball cultivates and the family aspect that is such a huge part of the program at Huntley.”
Describe the togetherness of the Class of 2025 players. Who were your leaders early on?
Watson: “Our class is so close and I consider each one of the girls some of my closest friends. We are super tight and do everything together which I think is a big part of why we work so well together on the court. I think two of our biggest leaders early on other than myself were definitely Alex Goritz and Sienna Robertson because they bring a certain calmness and positivity to the court no matter the situation.”
Hobbies or other interests outside of sports?
Watson: “I love spending time with my friends and traveling as well as doing fun crafts with friends.”
Any top NCAA programs you follow, players you admire?
Watson: “I obviously follow the University of Kentucky and admire all of the girls on the team. I also follow some other teams and admire Kennedy Martin from Florida and her style of play.”
What are your college plans, future in sports?
Watson: “I will be attending the University of Kentucky in the upcoming spring semester to study Elementary Education and play Division 1 volleyball.”
