Boys hoops win 4 straight
HUNTLEY — With a challenging stretch of Fox Valley Conference games looming, Huntley’s boys basketball team has found its stride.
The Red Raiders made it a four-game win streak with a 51-40 non-conference triumph over Rockton Hononegah Jan. 4. This win followed three victories at the DeKalb Chuck Dayton tournament. With the latest wins, the Red Raiders reached .500 at 7-7 overall.
Huntley hosts FVC rivals Crystal Lake South Jan. 8 and Burlington Central on Jan. 10. CLS and Huntley are tied for second place behind McHenry (4-0 FVC) with 3-1 records.
“We had a good week at DeKalb,” Huntley head coach Collin Kalamtas said. “We started out hot today (against Hononegah) and could not miss in the first quarter, but we knew we would have to withstand a run by them.”
Against the Indians (8-6 record), senior Zach Rysavy tallied nine points, was 4-of-5 at the free-throw line and added four rebounds and three assists and one 3-pointer. Hononegah came as close as six points behind from a 20-points deficit but the hosts scored the final six points for the win.
Huntley fans know Rysavy from his contributions on the gridiron as well as a state qualifier in the jumps in track and field.
“Rysavy isn’t a basketball-first guy, but he brings a lot of energy and is a team leader,” Kalamatas said. “He was voted one of our captains almost unanimously by the players. He’s a dependable free-throw shooter and made some big ones down the stretch.”
“We’ve been playing basketball together forever,” Rysavy said. “We have a great chemistry. We trust each other and the entire team came together.”
Seniors led the way as Sheldon Aninagyei Bonsu led with 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Following Rysavy’s nine points were Christian Wilson with eight points. Logan Darragh tallied seven and led in rebounds with 12 and Will Dillon had seven points and four rebounds.
