Update: Intensive search efforts leads authorities to the arrest of subject responsible for the July 18 Huntley shooting incident
HUNTLEY — As residents may remember, back in July, the Huntley Police Department identified 27-year-old Lewis C. McCracken of the 200 block of Villa Street in Elgin, as the suspect responsible for shooting at two adult male individuals residing in the 11800 block of Cape Cod Lane.
McCracken fled the area before authorities arrived on the scene and was also believed to be involved in a carjacking incident that took place in Bartlett the same day as the shooting.
A 2000 Dodge Ram work vehicle was stolen after McCracken and another male individual allegedly approached and threatened the car occupant with what was believed to be a firearm.
While the other suspect was later apprehended by Bartlett Police officers, McCracken was once again able to evade capture. The stolen vehicle was later recovered in Addison.
Authorities initially believed that McCracken had fled to California, however, through an intensive investigation, Huntley Police detectives were able to identify a location where McCracken may have been staying on Sept. 27.
According to Huntley Police Deputy Chief Linda Hooten, a search warrant was obtained and served for a residence in Donora, Pennsylvania later that day.
With the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies, McCracken was finally taken into custody and is currently being held at the Washington County jail in Pennsylvania awaiting extradition.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office approved several felony charges against McCracken back in July. Those charges include four counts of attempted murder, a Class X felony; one count of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony; and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony.
While the identities of the shooting victims have not been released by authorities, various Huntley residents claim that one of the individuals targeted by McCracken is a registered sexual predator who resides at 11860 Cape Cod Lane.
The offender, 29-year-old Felipe E. Wahlstedt, has recently gotten himself into trouble with local authorities after it was alleged that he was found inside of a vehicle at Leggee Elementary School (13723 Harmony Road, Huntley) while children were being dismissed from school for the day.
Wahlstedt, who is on probation after being convicted of various aggravated criminal sexual abuse charges, has now also been charged with a Class 4 felony of child sex offender present in a school zone.
He was not immediately taken into custody, but an arrest warrant was issued for his capture.
In an update to residents, the Huntley Police Department stated that Wahlstedt turned himself in on Sept. 28.
The Huntley Police Department extended its gratitude to the McHenry County Major Investigative Assistance Team, the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Donora Police Department, the Washington County Sheriff’s Fugitive Unit, the Charleroi Pennsylvania FBI Office, the Charleroi Police Department, the Washington County Drug Task Force, and the Washington County Reginal SWAT.
McCracken’s bond is currently set at $750,000. No further details are expected to be released at this time.
