Boys bowlers wrap up successful season at state
HUNTLEY — Huntley sophomore Austin Tenglin concluded his bowling season competing against the best IHSA bowlers in the second day for individual state qualifiers.
The Huntley boys bowling team finished 17th place on the first day of IHSA State Bowling Meet at St. Clair Lanes in O’Fallon Jan. 27 and did not advance to the second day. The Red Raiders concluded the first session with 5,707 pins.
Tenglin’s first day score and finish in 28th place in individual standings moved him to the second day of competition Jan. 28. He ended in 60th with a total of 2,391 pins.
“I used a stronger ball that got down the lane faster,” Tenglin said. “The second day was stressful and competitive.”
Tenglin said he will soon be competing in off-season leagues at Poplar Creek Lanes in Hoffman Estates. “I’m looking forward to getting my driver’s license so I can bowl every day,” Tenglin said.
HHS boys team members cheered on at a win by the girls squad win and looked back at their achievements after state.
“We’re happy we made it,” head coach Jacob Wagner said. “We have six sophomores and they’ll be back next season with a chip on their shoulder. They are already asking about what they can do better next season.”
The competition at the IHSA State Meet was the second straight season the Red Raiders advanced to clash with the 23 other state qualifying teams. Seniors Caleb Vergona and Joshua Waters concluded their HHS bowling careers at the state meet.
Individual results from day one were: sophomore Austin Tenglin, 266 best game, 1,131 total; senior Caleb Vergona, 279 best, 1,191 total; senior Joshua Waters, 206 best, 1,152 total; sophomore Joey Humphrey, 222 best, 924; sophomore Matthew Fishman, 238 best, 1,334 final total.
Season highlights included finishing fourth of six state qualifying teams at the Rockford Guilford Sectional and third at the DeKalb Regional and won 11 dual matches.
Seniors’ farewell
Wagner commented on the dedication of the team’s senior leaders, Waters and Vergona. Waters is the team’s most experienced bowler and aims to bowl in college. Vergona is in his second year of competition and will advance to bowl at Judson University in Elgin.
“Both boys lead by example and even when it isn’t vocal they will lead the boys by their results on the lanes,” Wagner said.
“Over the three years I have been with him he has grown,” Wagner said of Waters. “He really loves the game and the sport in general. I know if it were his choice he would be at the alley every day and working on some part of his game. He has confidence to take on anyone and as a team we need that fire. He is the only boy on the team who was not a part of the freshman class when I took over coaching three years ago. That is not always easy when you are replacing someone who is so respected by the team and ran a great program.”
“Vergona works his tail off to get better,” the coach said. “He is our lead-off bowler at every tournament we have been in this season. He is a guy who can keep it light at practice and have fun but can turn on the intensity and focus when he is on the approach. He has grown into a leader on this team for our young guys.”
