5 girls wrestlers move on to sectional
HUNTEY — Huntley’s girls wrestling team had a strong debut at the first IHSA Girls Wrestling Regional, held at Conant.
Two Huntley sophomore girls, Janiah Slaughter, 105, and Aubrie Rohrbacher, 130, earned championships the IHSA Regional, but took different career routes to get there.
“I’ve been wrestling since sixth grade, at 95 pounds, when I used to wrestle against boys,” Slaughter said.
For Rohrbacher, she is in just her second year in the sport.
“I also play lacrosse, and have played on a national team based in Michigan as a midfielder and defender,” Rohrbacher said.
Also joining the two champs and advancing to the Schaumburg sectional Feb. 9-10 were fourth-place finishers seniors Taylor Casey at 110 pounds and Jessica Olson at 140 pounds. Freshman Grecia Garcia ended fifth at 145 to also qualify. Huntley gained third place regional team honors with 147.5 points.
Head coach Gannon Kosowski said he was happy with the results, including that third-place team effort, at the first girls regional. “It was great to see Rohrbacher and Janiah’s championships,” he said.
Slaughter improved to 24-1 on the season at 105 pounds. She won three rounds by pin or technical fall before outlasting Veronica Cosio of Addison Trail, 9-4. Slaughter finished third at last year’s IHSA State Tournament at 100 pounds.
Slaughter missed about a month of wrestling due to illness. “She watched a lot of film and came back ready to go,” Kosowski said. “Slaughter was in charge of all her matches.” Slaughter finished third in the IHSA State Meet last season, but hopes for more this time. “This is my comeback year,” she said.
Rohrbacher closed in on a 40-win season as she took the title at 130 pounds. Rohrbacher, 38-3, also won three rounds by pin, before a 6-2 decision win over Viols Pianetto of Prospect in the final.
Fourth-place and advancing to sectional were Casey and Olson at 140 pounds. Casey, 35-8, had a 3-2 record total and fell in the third place match to Analee Aarseth of Crystal Lake South. Olson was 38-8 overall, 3-2 regional, and battled in the third place match and lost to Natalie Corona of McHenry by pin.
The final Huntley sectional qualifier was Garcia (24-16 record). She was 3-2 for the regional, advancing on a medical forfeit by an opponent in the fifth place round. Garcia battled an unbeaten Fenton wrestler to a 1-0 loss. She won two matches by pin.
Wrestlers who saw their seasons end at regional were: Valeria Sanchez, 17-21 overall record at 115 pounds; Aubrey Balovich, 7-13, 120; Amanda Wiktor, 9-6, 125; Lianny Guzman, 12-20, 135; Alyssa Aguilar, 10-15, 155; Abby Ward, 8-16, 170 and Sara Willis, 10-13, 215.
