Ukraine invasion hits close to home for one Sun City couple

HUNTLEY - Sun City residents Joseph and Mila Kacher are watching the unbelievable footage of an invasion of their birth country.  The Kachers immigrated to the United States in 1978, and although they left their country 44 years ago, the Russian invasion deeply affects them.

Mila said, “We decided to come to the United States in 1978 when the USA opened the borders. We were lucky. Seven of us left.  My husband and I with our 3-year-old daughter, my mother, his parents, and my sister-in-law.

HUNTLEY - The winter Olympics season comes with a lot of exciting events, and opportunities to cheer for the USA. But the cheering gets passionate when you have a relative in the game. Jo Geary, Sun City resident, is rooting for Savannah Harmon, a cousin once removed. Harmon is #15, and plays defense on the Women’s Hockey Team in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

Harmon is from Downers Grove, Illinois, and Geary joined family and friends by texting and calling late at night to root for their favorite Olympian.

Behind The candelabra

HUNTLEY - Ed Richard, a retired music teacher and Sun City resident, began his musical career at the age of four.

Richard said, “I started playing the accordion. In the fourth grade, I started playing the organ, and in fifth grade, I joined the band. In high school, I was the lead percussionist. I played all percussions. I sang in the choir. I have perfect pitch.”

What is perfect pitch?

This refers to a person's ability to identify any musical note by name after hearing it, without reference to other notes.

Vince Flanagan, Huntley: “I want to get this monkey off my back, literally. I have severe back problems, and my intention is finally get something done about it.”

Sona Kappil, Crystal Lake: “I need to make more time for my friends. I need to make a sincere effort to keep in touch. I have to keep our friendships alive.”

Rita Patel, Huntley: “We all wear matching pajamas. All of us, my kids, my husband, in-laws and siblings. And the best part is the men are responsible for the making dinner. My husband and brothers all get together and cook dinner for all of us.”

Anna Alagna, Huntley: “It’s about family and food. We’re Italian so it’s always about food. We always have fish on Christmas Eve.”

QUESTION: What do you think of the verdict for Kyle Rittenhouse?
This question was posed to over 20 individuals, male and female, from age 19 to over 60.  The responses are not all included here.  Some individuals were fearful of the consequences of voicing their opinion.  Four individuals didn’t know who Kyle Rittenhouse was.  Some shed tears when discussing their opinion on the verdict.

Tiffany Bieniek: “I do not like anything pumpkin except for pumpkin seeds. I don’t care for pumpkin flavor in anything, but I do love the pumpkin scents. I love the candles at this time of year with the pumpkin smell.”

Catalin Ursu: “I don’t like anything pumpkin.  No muffins, no pumpkin pie, no flavored coffee.”

Lexi Lucici: "My favorite costume was Cruella de Vil. I wore that costume for three years. I loved the wig for the character. It was my favorite because I loved that movie, 101 Dalmatians."

Peggy Kennedy: “I loved my cheerleader costume, but unfortunately it was cold enough that I had to wear a coat. What I remember most is that one household did not give me candy because they could not see my costume.”

Name, Place: “I went to school to be a pastry chef. I have been doing that the last 5 years working at Jarosch Bakery. I still want to continue to follow this path. This industry is so cool being able to be creative in so many different ways. I have worked in a couple of different bakeries and being able to see how each place works is rewarding.

QUESTION: What do you think about the US's withdrawal from Afghanistan?

Donna Schlenker: “Withdrawal needed to happen. Sadly, the last administration negotiated with the Taliban direct and left the Afghans to negotiate their own deal. Biden was right to continue with the withdrawal but sadly it is being handled poorly. There should be zero debate that Afghans who assisted the US over the past 20 years should be brought here to safety.

Kim Skaja: “I told him I knew I was speeding and asked if he could follow me to the next public bathroom because I really had to pee. In those days, there weren’t many places to stop. He sent me on my way!”

Jessica Frederick: “I was wearing my scrubs so he asked where I worked. I told him the vet field and that I was speeding because I'm also pet sitting and I got out late so I was rushing to let the dogs out.

Slowly rising water bills catch residents’ attention

Keeping your lawn green with your sprinkler system has gotten more expensive this year. Some residents were surprised when they looked closely at their water bill.

One of the selling points for installing a lawn irrigation system was a lower cost to watering your lawn. A separate meter could be installed that would measure the water used for outdoor purposes and a sewer charge would not be applied. Huntley charges for water is $3.67 per 1000 gallons while sewer charges are $4.85 per 1000 gallons, $8.52 total.
