Kane County K9 units help capture suspect that fled from a traffic stop in Sycamore
MAPLE PARK — On July 6, at approximately 8:38 a.m., the Kane County dispatch center received an inquiry from the Sycamore Police Department, asking the Kane County Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for a vehicle that had fled from a traffic stop in their jurisdiction.
Authorities described the vehicle as a red-colored Hyundai Elantra.
Deputies began searching immediate areas where the vehicle may have fled to, where eventually, a deputy was able to locate a car on Beith Road that matched the description of the wanted vehicle.
The suspect vehicle was backed up into a wooded area and had its license plates taken off. Despite the effort taken to obstruct identifying information on the vehicle, the deputy was still able to run the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the car, where it was discovered that the vehicle had been stolen out of Colorado.
Following the vehicle’s discovery, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter in the area and was able to use two K9 units to continue the search of the subject.
Sometime later, the K9 units were able to locate a subject that was walking through the field who identified himself as Miguel Vega.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect was the driver of the stolen vehicle. He admitted to authorities that he was the individual who fled from the police officer who made the traffic stop back in the Sycamore area.
The Sycamore Police officer involved in the traffic stop drove to the location where the suspect was found to make an identification of the vehicle and the driver.
After having been identified, the subject was taken into custody by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the Kane County Adult Justice Center in St. Charles.
As standard procedure, the subject was fingerprinted, which resulted in information returned showing that the fingerprints on file for the subject were not that of Miguel Vega, but of Carlos Diaz.
Diaz was charged with the following:
One count of receiving, possessing, or attempting to sell a stolen motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony; and one count of obstructing identification, a Class A misdemeanor.
Diaz is currently being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center with no bond posted.
