Red Raiders boys go 7-2 to start season
HUNTLEY – Through nine games, eight on the road, the Huntley boys basketball team is off to a solid start. Huntley downed Crystal Lake Central, 46-31, to begin its home schedule Dec. 8, for a 7-2, 3-1 Fox Valley Conference record.
A 16-2 third quarter Huntley run turned the tide. Omare Segarra tallied 11 points and had eight rebounds while Lucas Crosby also had 11 tallies. Jeff Cruickshank had an eight points, four rebounds game. The Red Raiders will face Crystal Lake South, a squad they beat 55-48 for the Johnsburg Thanksgiving title. The Dec. 13 game at CLS will be a FVC clash. The following game is at Burington Central Dec. 15.
Jacobs game
Huntley and rival Jacobs clashed for the early season for the FVC lead Dec. 6, but the host Golden Eagles edged the Red Raiders 48-46. Jacobs took the first place status at 3-0 Bryce Walker led the Red Raiders with 11 points and Crosby, Ethan Blackmore and Christian Wilson contributed eight points each.
“I was happy we stayed the course with their shooting. The game was not lost in the final five seconds but when we gave up too many offensive rebounds and we had some silly fouls. We’ll be more disciplined when we see them next round,” HHS coach Collin Kalamatas said.
Segarra (four points) got to the free-throw line in the closing two seconds but missed his first. He had to try and miss on purpose, but it did not get to the backboard and Jacobs got the loose ball to run out the clock.
