Cummings’ comeback proves satisfying
HUNTLEY — Maddie Cummings has a special incentive for a successful Huntley girls soccer season.
Cummings suffered a season-ending foot injury early last season against McHenry and missed the Red Raiders’ regional tournament winning, 17-victory season.
“The hardest part was watching,” Cummings said. “I got clearance to play in August and trained with my club team, Crystal Lake Force.”
“Last year she was a missing piece for us, but this year she will be a focal point, a leader,” Huntley coach Matt Lewandowski said.
Cummings got the scoring started with a goal half-way through the first half in a 4-0 win over Elgin Larkin March 30. Then Brooke Maxedon scored for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Red Raiders still needed two more goals to earn their invitational championship. Peyton Kohn and Gabbi Farraj got the job done, with the final tally with six minutes left.
Earlier in the tournament, Huntley had downed Rockford Auburn by a 9-0 shutout March 28. The tourney opened with a 1-1 tie against Boylan Catholic March 27, followed by the win over Larkin. HHS added another victory, 2-0 over Rockford Guilford, April 2 for a 3-1-2 record.
“It was fun to get the first goal,” Cummings said of the Larkin match. “The way their defense was set up made it easier to get break aways.”
Cummings also scored the first Huntley goal against Auburn en route to the easy win. Kohn, who had the match-tying tally against Boylan, added two more goals as did Ava Trudeau.
Cummings is a soccer veteran, having played the sport since she was 7-years-old.
The senior’s day was not complete, though, as she received flowers and a prom invitation afterward.
“It felt good,” Farraj said of her goal. “We had been frustrated over the first few matches.”
Coach Lewandowski said the Red Raiders did enough to beat Larkin.
“We found a way to win,” Lewandowski said. “We were able to show what we were capable of.”
Red Raiders who contributed assists were Sophie Bantor, Trudeau, Bella Fusco and Kylie Lucas.
Red Raiders beat Guilford
Huntley improved to 3-1-2 on the season with a 2-0 triumph over Rockford Guilford April 2.
The Red Raiders’ goals came in a five minute first half run on a wintry night at the pitch. Brooke Grabs tallied from an assist by Szydlowski then Maddie Rumachik scored a goal following an assist by Trudeau. Lackovic and Ashlyn Grabs shared the goalie duties.
Huntley’s Fox Valley Conference opener is at Crystal Lake Central April 9.
